Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)
Yom Kippur is the other High Holiday, considered the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Businesses close down and public transportation stops operating around 2PM on the eve of the holiday and before the sun sets everything else stops too. There’s no traffic and even the Israeli TV and radio take a 24 hour break. It is one of the times when not only Religious Jews frequent synagogues. It has become a secular custom to allow children to ride their bicycle in the empty streets, people go for long walks, and for one day the air in Tel Aviv feels as clear and clean as the Jerusalem mountain air.
