Just several months after Spanish pop singer Enrique Iglesias rocked Tel Aviv’s Nokia Arena, his famous father is on his way to Israel too. Julio Iglesias, one of top 10 best selling music artists in history, is scheduled to perform at the very same venue on December 12.
Iglesias will visit Israel as part of his world concert tour, “The Greatest Love Songs of All Times,” accompanied by 12 musicians. He will arrive on his private plane with 30 crewmembers.
Born in Madrid, 68-year-old Iglesias is considered one of the greatest and most successful Spanish singers of all times.
He began his career in the 1960s and rose to fame in the 1970s thanks to a series of kitschy ballads which became huge hits and turned him into an international star with lots of albums, fans and of course money. Throughout the years, he recorded songs in English as well, but always made sure to return to his Spanish origins.
Iglesias has eight children: Three of them – including Enrique – from his first wife Isabel, who he married in the 1970s; and five from ex-model Miranda Rijnsburger, his partner since 1990.
He visited Israel several times, the last one about two years ago, when he told his audience that his mother was Jewish and that he understood the State of Israel’s difficulties.
“I love Israel,” Iglesias says. “I love the warmth and love of the people here. I’m returning to Israel and to my fans in particular with all of my greatest love songs.”
The Spanish romantic will spend three days in the Holy Land, during which he plans to tour Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee.
Tickets are already on sale at the Castel ticket office, with prices ranging from NIS 350 to NIS 990 (about $100-280). The show’s producers, together with Iglesias’ staff, have decided to donate several tickets to the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel.

The work of 15 of the Czech Republic’s best known glass artists is the focus of Freedom to Create: Beyond the Glass Curtain. During the Communist regime, Czech glassmaking became a bastion of liberated thinking for experimentation and an enclave of relatively unrestricted creation due to its seemingly proletariat functionality. The glass artists were awarded the freedom to create while more traditional artists in painting and sculpture were limited by the government to promoting communist ideals.

Opening September 8, Litvak Gallery’s Czech glass exhibition highlights the work of veteran Czech artists Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, Vaclav Cigler, Vladmir Kopecky and Bohumil Elias, and shows their influence on younger artists such as Stepan Pala, Zora Palova and Vladmira Klumparova whose work has never been challenged by government restrictions. The work of these remarkable artists is displayed in an unforgettable show, expertly curated in a visually stunning display.

Where: Litvak Gallery, 4 Berkovitz St. Tel Aviv

When: September 8 – December 31, 2011

There is something in the 60`s that brings happiness to your mind. A decade that rehabilitated the world from the horrors of World War II, a decade who changed the face of history and brought optimism and hopefulness to the world is the corner stone of Philip Townsend’s exhibition.

The innocence in Philip`s photographs are shown on the smile on Mick Jagger`s and his band members` faces, an innocent smile that does not reveal the fact that they are going to be one of the greatest band in history, a band will change the face of music forever.

Besides The Stones and The Beatles, Philip photographed the 60`s. Major models, celebrities, politicians, businessman, art figures and more, all went through his camera lenses. His photographs reflect the 60`s, a decade that shaped and influenced our cultural, political, social and artistic way of thinking.

The renowned male dancers company who excell in performing classical repertoire in tutu and on pointe presents a program featuring its repertoire highlights including the second act of Swan Lake.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is an American all-male drag ballet corps which parodies the conventions and clichés of romantic and classical ballet. The company was co-founded by Peter Anastos, Natch Taylor and Antony Bassae in New York City in 1974, producing small, late-night shows, in off-off Broadway lofts. Their first show as on September 9, 1974, at a second story loft on 14th street, in the heart of the meat-packing district.
After receiving a favorable critical review in The New Yorker by Arlene Croce, it was discovered by a wider audience. The “Trocks” toured the world, with prolonged engagements in many major cities. In 2008 they performed at the Royal Variety Performance, in front of Prince Charles.
The dancers portray both male and female roles in a humorous style that combines parodies of ballet, posing and physical comedy with “straighter” pieces intended to show off the performers’ technical skills. Much of the humor is in seeing male dancers en travesti; performing roles usually reserved to females, wearing tutus and dancing en pointe.

Jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny will be returning to Israel for a show on November 26 and November 27 at Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv.
For Metheny’s first show here since 2000, the large venue will be set up as a big jazz club with seating around tables.

Pat Metheny was born in Kansas City on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility – a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument.

Metheny’s versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. He has been part of a writing team with keyboardist Lyle Mays for more than twenty years – an association that has been compared to the Lennon/McCartney and Ellington/Strayhorn partnerships by critics and listeners alike. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel’s principal institution of modern and contemporary, art has opened the new Herta and Paul Amir Building. Designed by Preston Scott Cohen, the 195,000-square-foot building is an elaborate addition to the campus of the Museum. The freestanding concrete-and-glass Herta and Paul Amir Building establishes a dialogue with the existing structures of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and with the renowned modern architecture of Tel Aviv, with its traditions of Mendelsohn, the Bauhaus and the White City. On the inside, the Amir Building reveals that it is built around a spiraling, top-lit, 87-foot-high atrium known as the Lightfall, whose subtly twisting surfaces curve and veer up and down through the structure. There are five levels to the building—two above grade and three below—which twist from floor to floor to accommodate large, rectangular galleries within the compact, irregular site. The stairs and ramped promenades of the Lightfall serve as the surprising, continually unfolding vertical circulation through these floors, connecting the disparate angles of the galleries and allowing natural light to refract into the deepest recesses of the half-buried building.

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art holds a comprehensive collection of Israeli art, representing all major trends and artists. A selection of some 250 of these works, dating from 1906 to the present, will be on view at the time of the inauguration of the Amir Building, presented in 18,500 square feet of galleries, in the country’s largest permanent installation of Israeli art.
