Bugrashov Beach

Located right in the middle of the beach line, Bugrashov is one of the most popular beaches in Tel Aviv. Bograshov Street is a very hip and tourist-friendly street, with quality cafes and restaurants, where you can spend an entire day, starting with breakfast in one of Bugrashov’s many cafes, then go down to the beach for a few hours, come back for a delicious lunch, do some shopping and wind up the day with a nice dinner.

Bugrashov Beach was the scene of one of the most traumatic and defining moments in Israeli history, when the newly founded Israeli army fired at Altelena, a Jewish boat carrying weapons into Israel in 1948. The military commanders feared the weapons, acquired by the Jewish national militias that had operated during British mandate, would be used to undermine the legitimacy of the recently formed  government. About 20 people were injured and 200 Israeli militia members arrested. The rest of the members were incorporated into the Israeli Defense Forces.

The country is still divided along political lines regarding this event, with some believing the act was necessary to maintain a unified army, and others rejecting the idea that the militias were looking to arm themselves and not hand over the weapons to the IDF. Assassinated former Israeli Prime Yitzhak Rabin was the commander who had ordered the firing of the gun on Altelena.
